Aamir Khan Says He Is Proud Of Kiran Rao As Laapataa Ladies Goes To Oscars 2025: 'Our Hard-Work Has Paid Off'

Laapataa Ladies at Oscars 2025: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has reacted to the selection of Kiran Rao's ‘Laapataa Ladies’ as India's official entry for Oscars 2025. The film was chosen from a list of 29 films, including Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal’, National Award-winning Malayalam film ‘Aattam’ and Cannes winner ‘All We Imagine As Light’.

In his statement, Aamir Khan thanked the selection committee of the Film Federation of India and said he is proud of Kiran Rao. 


The statement read, “We are all so happy with the news. I am so proud of Kiran and her entire team. I would like to thank the selection committee of the Film Federation of India, which chose our film to represent India at the Oscars.” 


He added, “My heartfelt gratitude to our audience, our media, and the entire film fraternity, for all the love and support they have given Laapata Ladies. Thanks to both Jio and Netflix who have been great partners to work with. I am so happy that all our hard-work has paid off.” 


“Thank you everyone 🙏🏽 Here’s hoping that Laapata Ladies is able to win the hearts of the members of the Academy,” the statement concluded. 


The film is backed by Rao’s Kindling Productions, Aamir Khan Productions, and Jio Studios.

Kiran Rao said she is "deeply honored and delighted" that her film will represent India at the 97th Academy Awards. 


"Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India."


"I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the selection committee and to everyone who believed in this film. It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year - who are equally worthy contenders for this honor," the director said in a statement. 


A 13-member selection committee, led by renowned Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua, chose 'Laapataa Ladies' unanimously. Among the top contenders in the list of 29 films were 'Laapataa Ladies', alongside other strong entries such as the Hindi film 'Srikanth', Tamil films 'Vaazhai' and 'Thangalaan', and Malayalam movie 'Ullozhukku'. 


About Laapataa Ladies




Released in March to widespread critical acclaim, 'Laapataa Ladies' is set in rural India in 2001 and tells the touching and empowering story of two brides who get accidentally swapped during a train journey. The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav in lead roles, with supporting performances by Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma. 


India has not secured a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars since Lagaan in 2002, which also starred Aamir Khan. Prior to that, only two other Indian films made it to the final five: the classic Mother India, starring Nargis, and Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay!
