When Mani Ratnam Asked Preity Zinta To Go Make Up Free In 'Dil Se'
New Delhi: The actor Preity Zinta reminisced about her time spent filming ‘Dil Se’, starring Mani Ratnam. Since it was her first movie, she anticipated a very different outcome. Preity uploaded a throwback photo from the sets and recalled being told to look fresh-faced for the movie by director Mani Ratnam.
Preity expressed her excitement in a blog post about working with Mani and Shah Rukh Khan, her co-star. However, she had no idea that she would be ordered to wash off her makeup. On X, she wrote:“This picture was taken on the first day on the set of Dil Se. I was so excited to be working with Mani Ratnam sir & Shah Rukh Khan. When Mani sir saw me he smiled and politely asked me to wash my face…. But sir… my make up will come off, I said smiling …. That’s exactly what I want… Pls wash your face…. He smiled back. I thought he was joking …. Then I realised he was not !!! (sic)”
She thanked Santosh Sivan, the cinematographer, for capturing her beauty even without makeup.
“So thanks to the amazing Santosh Sivan ( our Director of Photography) I filmed with a freshly washed face and got away with it. I guess he shot me Dil Se. #throwbackthursday #Dilse #Memories #Ting (sic)”, she wrote.

‘Dil Se’ did not do well at the box office upon its 1998 premiere, but the film's themes and plot have gained popularity over time. In the movie where Shah Rukh played a radio host, Manisha Koirala also starred. Manisha performed as a mission-driven, radicalized terrorist. One of the most recognizable songs on the album is Preity's song from the movie Jiya Jale, which was composed by AR Rahman.
‘Dil Se’ is one of Mani Ratnam’s most recognised and popular films that has garnered a cult following over the years.
